“Sadie and Me. I’ve had a lot of great dogs in my life, but none better than my Sadie. I got her when my kids were little—she’d been a failed shelter adoptee three times—too energetic, tended to run away. Now the years are catching up (she’s 17—119 in dog years) and she has trouble walking, or even standing sometimes. But she loves to be held like a little baby, and gives these deep sighs of contentment when she’s stroked. My kids are pretty much grown now, and Sadie is the dog they grew up with. Not sure of her breeding—they guessed Doberman/Husky at the Humane Society. I figured she’d be a good protective watchdog—but she’s a lover, not a fighter. At the dog park, the old lady will walk between big mutts squaring off for a fight, and it invariably defuses the situation. Dogs respect the elders of the pack.”
